Garden Blog!

Okay, so I'm doing a Garden this year. I've helped out in a couple but never done one by myself. So this is it. I'm going to try and keep this updated with kind of a log. So be prepared for the monotony of stupid little known facts! HA!

Day 1:

We broke ground on the garden today. Got pretty sore, and half way through the day realized I didn't have all of the equipment I needed. Headed out to Home Depot to get a big potato fork thingy to help get out larger sod pieces. Also got a reversable 2 tong thingy/hoe. Sure I'm going to need that. Went glove shopping too. I was tearing up my hands and they felt like hamburger. But, I HATE glove shopping. All of the nicer ladies gloves, for gardening, NEVER fit me. My hands are too wide or some such. So off I went to the mens dept and got a really cool pair. Came back home and finished approx. 1/2 of sod removal.

Also had the plants outside with me all day, "hardening" them off, so that when the time comes, I can plant them outside with out shocking the shit out of them.

Fun fact I read about watermelons, or melons in general. They are heat loving plant and most people make the mistake by dousing them with water every time they water their garden. From what I've read, you're not supposed to. They are very good about finding their own water and if you over water them or get the actual plant wet, it will "cool" it down and will stop the growing process. This is one of the biggest mistakes made. so apprently we don't water directly.
